Dan Dennett talks about Evolution

  1. The theory of evolution, no matter which way you slice it, is a rediculous excuse for a theory. My apologies, but I have to say that how can you prove this? Can you test it? No. And, of course, I know that your response would be "Can you prove creationism?" And my answer is no, I can't. Now, I'm not a scientist. I'm not a specialist. But I am a Christian, and I believe that what the Bible says is true. You call this uneducated, ignorant, and gullible, but I call it faith. You have faith. You have faith in your theory. If you had no faith, you wouldn't believe, now would you? No, you wouldn't. So I suppose that what I'm trying to say is that neither one can be proved; but yours CAN be disproved.

    Sincerely,

  2. Robin,

This sounds all so simple. Let me ask you, the same God that wrote the Bible also brought about the universe, right? Now, if he is consistent then what we see in the bible should also be what we see in the world, right? Unfortunately that is not how things are. It's easy to mock something that you do not understand. I know I was where you are for about 30 years of my life as a dedicated Christian believing all of the Bible, thinking evolution was a farce. I was dumb founded when I discovered that a great many of the people and events in the Bible either didn't happen the way it says they did or it didn't happen at all. I also found the Bible had many contradictions that just couldn't be easily explained. And contrary to what you may think evolution is well founded based on many lines of evidence. Besides, you can still be a Christian and hold to evolution, many do.

  3. @Robin,

Of course evolution can be tested, and there's plenty of evidence to support it. Where do you get this idea that evolution can't be tested?

In case you worry about the philosophical nature of proof, it's worth noting that Scientific proof is inductive, and unlike Mathematical proof, is not a logical necessity. But if you go down this path, you have to ask yourself if the theory of gravity or electromagnetism, or in fact quantum theory, is really proved, and if the standard of proof used for those theories is good enough for you.
