Canadian Healthcare

  1. At least you can be honest and inform everyone that the Canadian system is in trouble. France is now advising that their safety net is in trouble too.

Isn't it ironic that the greatest nation in the world doesn't guarantee health care. It may be part of the reason that we are the greatest even in the midst of a recession.

  2. It's so embarrassing when I go to other 1st world countries. I always have to explain that it's the "stars, bars, and Nascars" crowd -- the Fox News watchers --, and not normal people, that are opposed to it.

  3. Anon,

can you cite any evidence that the Canadian or French healthcare system is in trouble? Can you cite any evidence that shows it is in trouble specifically because it is universal?

  4. Anonymous,

As a Canadian, I can guarantee you that health care works perfectly well in Canada. I don't know where you got your info, but you got it wrong.

As for the US being the "greatest" country in the world... why is it then that your "greatest" country has 1% of its population in prison?? Your country comes second after communist China!!

In the US, countless people die every day of various illnesses otherwise treatable only because they can't afford the treatment! Both in Canada and France, even the poorest of people have access to the best medical care!

If that was true it would be front page news. I live in Canada and have heard no such thing. I think rural areas needing more doctors and nurses is the biggest problem. But heck, we are the second largest country in world, with a relatively small population.

I've never heard of co-pay either, but Ontario did have "extra" billing at the doctor's office not too long ago. A Canadian's largest medical cost are their prescriptions (alternative medicine not withstanding.) In some provinces though, like Quebec, even prescriptions are partly subsidized.

The American system though, has produced medical researchers and other professionals are the envy of the world. Just check out the nationalities on the list of Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine. There hasn't been a Canadian on that list since Banting.

  6. Hi Robert, thanks for commenting.

"As a Canadian, I can guarantee you that health care works perfectly well in Canada. I don't know where you got your info, but you got it wrong."

I suspected that. I'm an American, so I don't know for sure, but every time I talk to Canadians they seem pleased with their healthcare. Until our anon commenter has some hard data to back up his assertions, I'll believe my Canadian friends.

As an American, I want very badly to stand behind my country and be proud of it. At one point in time it was the greatest nation on earth, one that had stood up for a lot of values that it could be proud of. But the past 40 years or so have not been good. The election and re-election of George Bush were particularly nasty points in our history. But I think we can turn around. In fact, I think America is turning around, although we have some that want to stay backwards.

That is why I'm for a change in our healthcare system. My mother works as a nurse and she has seen people who were too poor to afford cheap prescription pain medication (thankfully for them, my mother agreed to purchase the medication for them). If my mother hadn't covered them, they would have had to suffer.

  7. I had a heart attack in 99. After I got out of the hospital I spent 6mos in cardiac rehab. In 2004 I had a tumor removed from behind my spine (benign) and spent another 3 mos in rehab.
The only expense was the parking!
I also went to a Dr. in another province just about 6 weeks ago because I had forgotten one of my heart meds. I did get a letter from my province's health care asking if I had indeed gone. I checked the yes box,put it in the sase and that's the last I heard of it.
